MY STORY / MY YEAR WITH MOLLUSCUM

Okay, let me first say that this is not an entirely pleasant read. Molluscum Contagiosum is a skin disease that I suffered for the entire year of 2005. The only reason that I have created this page is to help out whoever else may be dealing with it. I was forced to learn a great deal about this infection the hard way, I literally spent thousands of dollars trying different things to cure it, and unfortunately I even had doctors who misdiagnosed me and made things worse.

I don’t wish this disease on anyone, and I am happy to announce that through trial and error, I have figured out how to overcome it. And it’s really not all that expensive in the end.

What follows is my personal experience; I can’t guarantee that what I’ve done will work for everyone or that your experience will be the same as mine. This is just my way of trying to give back and help, so that hopefully if you’re dealing with it, you can be all better within a month or two, instead of a full year like me.

THE DOCTOR EXPERIENCE

It is not my intention to bad-mouth anyone, but my personal experience with the dermatologists was very painful, very expensive, and did NOT cure the disease. As anyone who has been probably knows, the doctor’s method of treatment is to literally scrape the lesions off the skin. Granted, this works for many people, but in my case it was just a temporary fix. See, here’s the problem – after the treatment, the doctor told me to go home and soak in the tub as a way to remove the “debris.” However, after talking to other specialists, I’ve learned the painful truth that the virus actually flourishes in a warm, damp environment. Soaking in the tub actually made it worse. This much I also know for sure, because of the way it spread on me. At the beginning, I only had one cluster of lesions, right below my waist. After being scraped and soaking in the tub, they came back – not just in one cluster, but all over the place.

What sucks even more about this is the fact that this happened a few times before I knew what was going on. I kept paying for these costly and unpleasant treatments, only to go home and spread the remainder even more.

Here’s the lesson – do NOT soak in the tub. Keep the area as dry as possible. Shower, don’t soak, and then dry the area off as soon as you’re finished. Avoid hot tubs, although a cold swimming pool once in a while should be okay so long as you dry off right away.

GROOMING

Something else I learned the hard way is the whole shaving thing. I was keeping the area clean shaven as a way to see things clearer… foolishly. Ya see, not only does the possibility of razor bumps create the potential for an ugly confusing mess of redness, but the razor itself can actually open and spread the lesions. Ya accidentally pop one of those things, and you’ve just made it worse.

Here’s the lesson – it’s a good idea to keep the area trimmed… but don’t use a razor. Use a beard and mustache trimmer, or use scissors. Keep it short, but not bald.

SELF TREATMENT

I asked my doctor if I should use medicated lotion on the area to help it heal. He said yes. Once again, this was a mistake. The virus thrives in a warm and damp environment, remember? Lotion makes it worse! Once again, let me stress – keep the area as dry as possible.

Here’s what does work – tea tree oil. You can find it at any natural products store. And it’s only $15 a bottle or so (depending on the size). The stuff is extremely potent as a natural antibacterial, and thus the bottle will last you a long time. Make sure you get the 100% pure stuff; Desert Essence and JASON are good brand names to look for. If you can’t find any yourself, I’ve made some available to order online HERE.

If you look closely at a lot of the herbal remedies out there online (once again I won’t bad-mouth anyone here, but I also spent a lot of money trying the various concoctions you can buy online and they also did NOT work for me), they all boast tea tree oil as one of their main ingredients. So… why get something that boasts a powerful ingredient in the mix, when you can just get the ingredient by itself?

ALTERNATIVE HOME TREATMENT

If you’ve already searched the Internet for Molluscum information, you’ve probably come across some of those electronic skin-zapper devices. I’ve tried these too. I admit, they help… but they also can cause side effects. The part that I used to zap the spots helped them heal… but the other parts that you use on your surrounding skin to “ground” the electrical charge actually caused these weird itchy spots that took a long time to go away.

If everything else I’ve mentioned here doesn’t work for you, try the electrical approach. But, I highly recommend that you only buy the unit and the absolutely necessary pieces that go with it – don’t buy the whole expensive bundle, because a lot of the extra crap they throw in there is a rip-off. I bought one that had this special “molluscum soap” in it, and I swear I could see the outline of the word “Olay” very faintly on the bar.

But, here’s the only problem – the stuff is so potent, you have to be careful when applying it. Seriously, use a cotton ball. One drop only. Apply it very lightly to the whole area; do not use your fingers, and do not pour it on directly. Then, you have to keep an eye on the area. If a part of your skin reacts harshly to the stuff (usually as dry redness), have some hydrocortisone and neosporin handy. Really if you’re careful you shouldn’t need it, but keep it handy to be on the safe side.

Ooh, and check this out – they actually make tea tree oil soap. You can get it at Trader Joe’s, among other places. Use it in the shower, it helps.

HEALING FROM THE INSIDE

Another big, big part of recovering from the Molluscum Contagiosum virus is getting your immune system as strong as possible. Your body will recognize and combat the virus, but not if it’s already busy fighting the flu or colds – so start getting yourself as healthy as possible. Stay away from alcohol, eat healthy, and exercise.

Another key aspect to ultimate health is customized nutrition. Search in your area for anyone doing “nutrition response testing”; it’s really the best way to get your system as strong as possible, remove your body of toxins, and get yourself operating at 100%. Think of this; you wouldn’t buy a one-size-fits-all shoe, now would you? Right, so, why would you randomly buy vitamins off the shelf without knowing what your body needs? The same point applies to nutrition; have a professional check you out and see exactly what you need, and then use that information to heal naturally.

If you’re in Upstate NY, I highly recommend this place: http://www.backtowellnesscny.com

FOOD

In addition to custom essentials, it helps to eat food that is also good for your skin. That would be anything that is rich in vitamins A and E. Almonds, carrots, broccoli and spinach are the easiest to come by. Fish oils are also very good for the skin, so make sure you get lots of fish in your diet.

REVIEW

Let’s sum up.

1. If you have lots of lesions, visit the dermatologist and get them removed. But be vary wary of everything I have said so that they do not come back. Hopefully everything else listed will be a preventIve measure.

2. Keep the area as dry as possible.

3. Keep the hair short, but not shaved.

4. Dab the infected area with tea tree oil via cotton ball once in the morning and once before bed. Wash the area with tea tree oil soap when showering. Keep hydrocortisone handy just in case any areas of your skin react harshly to the oil. (That only tends to happen when heavy doses are used on NON-infected skin.)

5. Get your immune system running at 100%. This means eat healthy, stay away from drugs and alcohol, work out, and look into “nutrition response testing”.

All in all, this won’t cost you very much money. A couple hundred bucks, tops. And in the end, you’ll be much healthier.

  1. Hi, I just want to say thank goodness I found this site and persisted with the tea tree oil. Our doctor said my daughter had the worst case of molliscum she had every seen . It seemed to be spreading by the week and was all around her pelvic area and knees and arms. Nothing had worked to datevandni tried this and made sure morning and night the oil went on. 2 weeks later they are gone. We are all so happy. You can still see the red marks but they are not raised at all so now her skin is healing. I have to say at times they looked worse before they got better, however my daughter does get eczema so I think the tea tree did irritate her skin at times. I just stopped for a day and put the hydro cort on as you said. So thank you again and I just hope this gets recognised as what seems to be the cure for this horrible virus.

    • Kate,

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this; it warms my heart and reminds me why I take the time to relive my hellish experience every time I answer a comment or e-mail. I’m very, very glad that my tips worked and that your daughter is all better. Thanks for sharing.

  2. Thanks for your information and the kindness to share it. After reading this blog, I started treating my daughter’s molluscum with tea tree oil. She had just one of it on her face which was scraped at the doctor’s and came back! Didn’t get the root out properly I think. I was desperate and frightened of it spreading all over her face. Anyway, with 3 applications daily of TTO, it shrank fast during the first week and then stayed like that for sometime (3 weeks). That was when I was beginning to give up on it. It was a very slow process so I switched to benzoyl peroxide for a week and then back to TTO. For the past week, I have also been applying ‘mint extract’ which is in a gel like capsule. The effect of mint extract is a cold sensation on your skin which lingers for a long while and I thought it would be unpleasant for the virus to live in such an environment. Today, after six weeks I am confident it will be completely gone soon as it has now become a pin size head. Still TTO nightly. Be patient is all I can say (because I, for one, was not!). Hope my information has been of help.

  3. Many customers purchase Lemon Myrtle Essentials not just for its refreshing and uplifting properties, but also for molluscum contagiosum.

Great positive feedback! Important to read other people’s experiences here http://www.lemonmyrtleessentials.com/molluscum.htm

Article: Essential oil of Australian lemon myrtle (Backhousia citriodora) in the treatment of molluscum contagiosum in children http://digg.com/u13unh and http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15183850

I hope this helps. I know how despairing it feels to have a skin condition like this.

  4. Hi there, I followed your advice on using tea tree oil on my daughters bumps on her face, I applied it once a day, at bed time (less chance of being washed off) and if I missed a day I would try to apply it twice the next day, that’s all I did and it seemed like it was doing nothing but making the surrounding skin very dry and flaky, however, I persevered as she was very self conscious about it (as you would be when you have a cluster of strange bumps on your forehead) it took a good three months, but they did die off and disappeared altogether, amazing!!! she has her confidence back especially while at school around the other kids. it is such a simple remedy but def requires consistency, just keep at it, we saw no changes for a long time then in the third month things started becoming smaller, we got so excited it spurred me on to remember to do it every night, and viola….gone, hope this helps someone who may be wondering if it will ever work for them, hang in there….:-) thank you so much for this website, it really is a wonderful thing.

  5. Thanks Christopher for writing about your experience! My story sounds very similar to yours…hoping for the same positive results! I’m writing this as the before article with hopes I can come back on here soon and announce that I’ve kicked MC’s a$$. I’ve had bumps on and off for almost a year now and I’m VERY ready to get rid of these suckers once and for all. I took the Dr’s advice and have been waiting on them to go away on their own, but what good that did, ugh. I’m armed now with Apple Cider Vinegar, Tea Tree Oil, TTO soap, and vitamins. Things that I hadn’t been doing initially but just started are changing towels everyday, avoiding soaking in water (just showers), and finding larger pants (agree with you here, think tight clothes makes a BIG difference). I’m increasing my exercise schedule, cutting out smoking, and reducing my alcohol consumption also in hope that this will help with the fight against MC. Reading articles like yours are very inspiring for folks like me that expected this to have been gone months and months ago. Armed with a positive attitude and a multitude of remedies, I’m sure I’ll be back here soon to post the positive results…thanks again!

  6. Both of my children have been suffering from MC for approx 6 months. I found your page a few months back when, like so many parents, I was feeling totally hopeless watching these things take over my daughters body. And, like many parents, numerous trips to the GP only resulted in a shrug of the shoulders and advice to leave them alone, they will go away. It has taken the better part of two months, but now they only have a couple here and there (my daughter had hundreds at one point). I am almost too scared to admit our battle is ending bc I don’t want to jinx it!

I found so many of the stories here helpful, so I wanted to offer our approach too, in the hope that someone might pick up something useful or at least be assured that you CAN do something.

    Things that worked for us:
    - TTO applied to the spots twice a day with cotton buds (to try not to dry out the healthy skin too much)
    - Fatty Advantan ointment daily, which is an eczema cream, to combat the drying effects of the TTO and any eczema that was surrounding the spots
    - a fresh towel every day – yep the washing has gone through the roof, as will the bill bc I’ve ben using warm water
    - fresh PJ’s every night – my daughter in particular would scratch in her sleep and I was really conscious of the potential to spread the virus this way. So new jambes evert night seems a necessity
    - all clothes washed in warm water and never re-wearing things before they were washed (think dress-ups, light jackets and cardigans etc)
    - showers for my daughter and quick baths for my son – ALL toys removed and I would sanitise the bath before each wash

The other thing that really made a difference was removing the core of the spot when it surfaced. Chris, I know you won’t like this one! We know that once the core is removed that individual spot dies. We also know that removing the core is dangerous bc it is the contagious bit that causes spreading. However, I found when the core was right at the surface of the skin, a pair of sterilised tweezers were perfect for quickly and cleanly plucking out the core without much discomfort. We would then wrap the core in a tissue, re-sterlize the tweezers, and move on to the next spot. You know when you’ve succeeded bc the blood will literally flow from the hole left behind. My daughter was ok with us doing this (only a couple at a time), but my 3 yo son was not. So, I would do it in his sleep. The reason I started to do this was bc I was concerned my daughter would scotch the top off the spot and the core would rub of clothes, other parts of her body, or be spread from her fingertips. So it actually seemed less risky, that just leaving them. BUT – I never went digging around. We only attacked spots where the white core was looking to break through the surface of the skin.

Things that did not work for us included:
    - ACV baths – it just made my son smell funny and dried him out
    - immimiqioud – a ridiculously expensive cream to treat skin cancer. We trialled an area with only this cream, and I can say the result was no different to where we used the TTO. In fact, I think there will be some scarring where we used the cream
    - Lemon Myrtle Oil – again we trialled an area with LMO, but found it helped the spots spread. I think this is bc you need to mix it with Olive oil bc it is so potent. The spots love a warm moist environment, which is exactly what the LMO/olive oil combo created. We stopped using it quite quickly when we saw the spread of the spots.

And last of all the jury is out on the Beetle Juice. We ended up at the Derm recently (bc it took so long to get an appointment), and she applied the Beetle to the last of the spots in my daughters armpit. I can say it was effective is killing the spots quickly – a few days at most. And my daughter hasn’t complained of any pain. But there are small blisters that look nasty and I suspect they will scar her skin.

So I hope that helps someone out there! Don’t buy into the “leave them alone” propaganda from GPs who are conditioned not to recommend anything that can’t be guaranteed. There are lots on non-invasive strategies you can employ to help subdue this virus at the very least.

    Good luck.

  7. All I can say is thank you, thank you, thank you for taking the time to share your story with Molluscum!!!! My 5 year old daughter came in contact with this disease about 6 months ago and nothing has worked to get rid of it. So the other day I Googled how to get rid of Molluscum and your blog came up. I read all the success story and though well I’ll give it a try and sure enough after only two day of using the tree tea oil it is starting to go away. I am so relieved that there is something out there that actually works. I really hope that the American Academy of Dermatology listens to you and that your word is spread to others in need. Who would have known that an inexpensive bottle of tea tree oil could help so many people. God bless you!!!

  8. Following the advice found on this site and other ones across the internet, I’m happy (and a little cautious) to announce that I’ve beaten MC! Although I worry one day I’ll find another one of those suckers popping up randomly, I’ve gone easily over 2 months now with no new outbreaks. What I had assumed to be an allergic reaction in June ’13 turned into a battle stretching almost an entire year. Even though the doctor said it would go away with time, I’m sure anyone with MC can agree that nobody wants to wait for these annoying bumps to just magically disappear on their own time. What seemed to work for me the best was consistent application of Apple Cider Vinegar to the bump and surrounding area. Also, I found it important to really go hunting for these guys and search everywhere on your body. Once found, treat, treat, and treat some more until they’re completely gone (might have a slight scar but will fade with time). A few other techniques used in my battle with MC included: Tea Tree Oil/Lemongrass Soap (can find on Amazon), going back to my old detergent (even though I don’t believe this was the issue), purchased Tea Tree Oil (rarely used it since the ACV worked better in my experience), and I began only using my bath towels once. Another tip, avoid long exposure baths/hot tubs/pools or just water in general. My worst break-outs came after I spent a weekend on vacation enjoying the hot tub every night. Best of luck to everyone out there fighting the MC fight! Be optimistic and consistent with your treatment and I know you will finally reach a life without MC.

  9. We visited a dermatologist 2 months ago for a rash we believe was related to an environmental exposure but she also had some ‘blisters’ he diagnosed as MC….he gave us some topical ointment Tazuar (sp?) that just made the spots horribly red and swollen. Now she has developed bumps all over her body and we visited a new dermatologist today that said it was MC and she applied a topical treatment that couldn’t be prescribed but she could only do a few of them because my daughter had so many and she couldn’t run behind at the clinic. Really? You are worried about running behind instead of completely treating a patient? I’m ready to try this method tonight, my only questions is she has so many all over her body from the neck down – does one drop on a cotton ball work for the whole body of a small 8yr old?

    • Start with one drop; if you notice partway through that there’s no more shine or “glisten” on the spots as you treat them, start over with a second cotton ball and do the same process. It’s potent stuff and it spreads far, and it’s important to be careful not to over-apply.

Apologies for the delayed feedback, I hope this doesn’t come too late and that things have improved for your little one.

  10. chris,
thank you so much for this. I have MC on my leg and I hate it. I am very self conscious about it and I have had it since last year. my doctor said to leave it alone and it would go away, but I’ve been waiting and waiting. in the meantime I’ve put hydrocortisone eczema lotion on it but it hasn’t helped. I can’t wait to see if this oil works, but will it make my eczema worse? my molluscum came with it and it gets dry. will it dry it out more? I can’t explain my gratitude to you; so much weight is off my shoulders.

  11. Hey everyone…wanted to share my experience with molluscum! thankyou for all these write ups to get me through this! I had a bump on my eyelash line 2 years ago, didn’t know what it was had pink eye for 4 months before opthamologist figured it out:( eventually got two more bumps near eye and had them all removed . but because how unaware I was about the virus it spread started getting them on my thighs. anyways for a WHOLE YEAR I used apple cider vinegar to kill bumps and finally they started to go away:))) I put vinegar on cotton and put them n bumps with bandaids and my skin would just be burnt but at that point I would’ve done anything!

well then after I went out and partied with alcohol a couple of nights they came back:(( now I was losing it and so I got three of my cousins who I love very much to come wear gloves and have everything to disinfect with them . they removed the cores and I did this 3 to 4 times a week for about 6 weeks and now I don’t see any bumps and its been about 5 weeks:)) I WISH I would have removed the cores 2 years ago…

on top of all this I had an extremely healthy diet, gluten and dairy free low acid diet because everytime I was acidic or stressed I would have a break out.

I ate lots of vitamins vitamin d, b, c, iron, zinc, fish oil, pau d arco, lysine immune system boosters kale shakes just super healthy.

I found all this worked for me and I think if your immune system is too busy fighting other issues as in food allergies… it will take longer to resolve the molluscum.

but for me the core removal was key. this is what worked best for me I don’t know about everyone, im not a doctor, oh and I use tea tree oil so much on any type of skin bump I see now ! good luck I hope you find what works for you:)

  12. Just wanted to thank you for this blog. I had a few bumps, first doc scraped and tested and said they were nothing. Then more showed up and a dermatologist said they’re mollusvum and froze a few and to come back in a month IF I still had them. It took forever to get another appointment when they started to spread a few weeks later. Finally went two more times for freezings and they were slowly going away but new ones popping up.

I started using the tea tree oil & soap, cut alcohol and began taking echonacea and garlic pills on Friday and by Sunday those new ones were almost completely gone! The ones they froze still look like red and will hopefully fade but the new ones are going away fast. Thanks a million!

  13. I started using tea tree oil on my 8 year old daughter after reading these posts and hope to report good results in due course. I am also thinking of other things I can do and wanted to check if anyone had tried Lysine (oral supplement). I suffered from bad cold sores in the past and eventually became disciplined at treating them early with Acyclovir and Lysine. Lysine seemed effective, although I recognize that studies are mixed. It is thought that it interferes with the absorption of arginine, which is required by the virus. Anyway, as M.C. is also viral, it made me think that Lysine plus T.T.O. could help. Has anyone tried this? I guess the obvious other question is what about an ant-viral acyclovir cream or oral treatment? There must be some reason why that does not work or I imagine that doctors would recommend it… Any comments welcome! Thanks.

  14. I started using the tea tree oil on my 14 yr old after I noticed the bumps starting on the backs of her legs. After a week and a half they look much better and are almost gone. Thanks for the advice!

  15. Thank you for sharing your story. My 5 1/2 year old daughter was covered in molluscum including her arms, elbows, knees, and groin. They were very itchy and painful and made her miserable. The doctor didn’t give it much thought, said it was a common skin problem and would go away eventually on it’s own. After many mistakes on my part to try to get rid of them, I came to your blog and tried the tea tree oil. Wow! What a difference. It’s been about 10 day and the bumps are almost completely gone. Her skin looks amazing, no scaring. The skin is little dried out but manageable. Thank you!

  16. I have been using the tea tree for some time now but it doesn’t seem to be working. I am using a q-tip to apply. The bumps on her get large and red. Do you think using I am using too much? Will/Can using too much make it worse?

    • Too much can definitely irritate the skin, but it shouldn’t make the molluscum itself worse. If this is still going on, try applying the oil – thinner, via a cotton ball – and then if the skin is irritated afterwards, wash it off after 15 minutes or so. This has been known to help those with sensitive skin.

  17. folks,we need to thank christopher for this blog.My 8 year old was diagnosed and we were told her MC would go away, but it doesn’t. USE THE TEA TREE OIL .After 3 bottles and 5 -6 weeks it will be gone .Forget the doctors and painful procedures .They cannot help you with this .Try this first exactly as prescribed

    • It shouldn’t; if anything it’s probably mental. It’s amazing how much the little tiny lesions will totally screw with your head. Relax; so long as there’s not enough friction to cause a spot to pop, ejaculation shouldn’t affect things.

  18. I have been following this post ever since I found out I had MC in March. I am in my late 40s and married for 25 years to the same women. I like many have no idea how or where I aquired this virus. I was told by my doctor that the three bumps I had on my belt line was just infected hair folicals and nothing to worry about. Guess again, a month later it spread to my pubic area and I had 20 or so bumps. This was the beginning of the worst time in my life to date. When my dermatologist finally told me what I had it wiped me out. How did I get this and how was I going to tell my wife? I immediately told her and it did not go well. It put a strain on me and my marriage to the point of ending 25 years together. I found this website went out and bought TTO and ACV and began applying twice a day to get rid of this nightmare. I did not receive relief from the TTO as many on here have but did see some relief from the ACV. It would actually kill the virus and the bump would turn black and heal up. Given the fact that most of my bumps where in the pubic region though I couldn’t apply the ACV with bandaids. I used ACV where I could and then TTO everywhere else. When it eventually appeared on the inside of my legs that was it for me. I called the dermatologist made an appointment and had them scrapped off. I was scared to have this done due to all the feed back I read on the internet but it was not bad at all and it totally made the difference. It has been over a month since the procedure and I do not have anymore bumps. The only sign is some minor scares but believe they will disappear over time. This whole ordeal consumed my life for 7 months, impacted my marriage, and lost countless nights of sleep over this. While we are still married, my wife is freaked out about it coming back and infecting her. I have showed her countless web sites including the CDC where it states once the bumps are gone the virus is gone and not transmittable. I don’t know what else to do but give it more time, show her the bumps have not returned and we can return to having a sex life. In the meantime I continue to clean that area with TTO as a precaution and check seveal times a day. Are there any married people out there that went thru this and what did you do to get back to normal? I despartely miss the life I had with my wife before MC.

    • Jeff,

Following my ordeal, I’m married, and the sex life is good with no degree of paranoia or fear. What I found helped was complete honesty. I’ve counseled many whose relationship got in trouble because the other assumed that the disease was transmitted sexually, when actually most people I talk to go the virus from another means – hot tub, used towel, locker room, etc. Once it’s made apparent that that’s the source, that tends to ease the tension a bit.

And yes, once the virus is gone, it’s GONE. For good. It doesn’t lay dormant like HPV does.

And yes, occasionally I need to check myself, trim the body hair, and once in a long while I’ll see a suspicious spot. I don’t take chances; if there’s even a chance that it’s something contagious, I freeze it with Compound W freeze-off. The result is 2 weeks of painful healing, but my wife knows that I’m taking every precaution to keep her safe.

Feel free to e-mail me, or heck, have her e-mail me, at chris@skinfection.net if need be. This virus is bad enough, but if you’re healed – and yes, the scraping method can work if there’s no debris left over – then there’s no reason that the pain need continue. Life should get back to normal.

      • I appreciate the feedback and that you were able to go back to normal. Unfortunately my wife of 25 years wants a divorce and says she will never feel the same way about me as a man and lover. Pure tragic result that just adds to the pain I have felt for 7 months. MCV truely destroyed my life and I never knew how.
